ICYMI: Una Healy throws cold water on throuple story, Lily Rose Depp’s new series criticised, and Jude Law takes method acting too far

1. The boy is (not) mine: Una Healy pours cold water on throuple rumours

The story was picked up far and wide but by far my favourite detail was when Healy realised in Costa Rica that she needed to call time on any romantic dalliances with Haye. She felt it was a ‘sign’ that things weren’t right when she heard 1998 banger The Boy Is Mine by Brandy and Monica, a song about two love rivals feuding over a man. “As soon as I got there, I could hear the song. It just wasn’t right.” Request for Una to do a cover of the 1990s classic immediately.

2. Father’s Day gift ideas get a shake-up

Dads are notoriously difficult to buy presents for. So to help everyone out ahead of Father’s Day, the good people at Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow’s multimillion-dollar empire, have put together a gift guide. Instead, of the usual suspects they suggest buying a $200 anal vibrator (with eight different speed settings). Goop editors explained they wanted to “keep broadening the field” in their present suggestions. If by ‘broadening the field’ they mean ‘making things unbelievably awkward’, they are on the right track. If by ‘broadening the field’ you mean ‘making things unbelievably awkward’ then you’re on the right track.

3. Library book returned a century late

Californian librarians were surprised this week when local man Jim Perry dropped back a book that was almost 100 years overdue. A copy of Benson Lossing’s History of the United States was supposed to be returned to the building on February 21, 1927 but only found its way back to the building earlier this month. At the time the book was borrowed, fines for overdue titles were 5c a day, meaning Perry theoretically could have been on the hook for about $1,756. Luckily for him, the library scrapped late fines in 2019.

4. Lily Rose Depp series fails to impress

HBO’s series The Idol, starring Lily Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, met with highly unfavourable reviews this week. Variety said it “plays like a sordid male fantasy”. The Daily Telegraph said it “makes Showgirls look like a masterpiece” and contains the “worst line of dialogue you’ll hear all year”. A writer at The Cut said it made her want to “shut myself in a dark, soundproof coffin for hundreds of years”.

5. Blood, sweat and... sewage?

We’ve heard of method acting but now there’s method smelling. During a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival actor Jude Law revealed that he doused himself in a scent of “blood, faecal matter and sweat” to portray Henry VIII in his new movie Firebrand. “I thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful,” he said. Jude worked with a regarded perfumist to create a revolting scent which, they believed, would mimic the English king’s odour — factoring in that Henry had bed sores, a dislike of baths and a diet high in boar. The movie got an eight-minute standing ovation at Cannes but was it worth it? Director Karim Aïnouz said: “When Jude walked in on set, it was just horrible”.
