By May of 2017, American politics was in crisis. Donald Trump’s administration had already become a wildly divisive circus act, and suspicions were growing that the Russians had remotely meddled in the presidential election. News website The Intercept was looking for proof, and an National Security Agency (NSA) translator called Reality Winner obliged, anonymously sending them a classified report indicating Russian hackers had accessed US voter registration polls and sent targeted phishing emails to more than 100 local election officials.
