Tanya Sweeney: We’ve been told the pandemic is officially over — but it doesn’t really feel like it, does it?

A few weeks ago, I read a news story that only a couple of years previously, I had fantasised furiously about finally seeing. The director general of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared ,“with great hope”, the end of the Covid-19 pandemic as a global health emergency. “For more than a year the pandemic has been on a downward trend,” he said. “This trend has allowed most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19.” The virus hasn’t been entirely eradicated, but remains a low-level global health threat.
