Dundalk FC poised to complete fifth signing ahead of new season
Dundalk FC are understood to be lining up a move for former Brighton defender Archie Davies.
The 24-year-old right back is currently on the books of National League side Aldershot Town and featured off the bench in their 2-2 draw away to Bromley last weekend. He has made 27 league appearances for Ross McNeilly’s side in total this season.
The Englishman, who was also on the books of Crystal Palace as a youngster, made his professional debut when he started for Brighton under current Chelsea boss Graham Potter in their 3-1 EFL Cup defeat to Aston Villa in September 2019 with Republic of Ireland international Conor Hourihane and English international Jack Grealish on target on the night for the winners.
He then signed for Crawley Town in the summer of 2020, making 75 appearances in total across two seasons in League Two, which included a late cameo in their memorable 3-0 win over Leeds Utd in the FAI Cup at Broadfield Stadium in January 2021.
Davies, who grew up for a part of his life in Lanzarote, subsequently moved on to Aldershot Town last June but is understood to be in talks over a move to Oriel Park.
Head coach Stephen O’Donnell is in need of cover at right back at present following Lewis Macari's return to Stoke City at the end of last season and an injury to John Mountney in a recent training match with Shelbourne. The club are awaiting a final assessment on the nature of the knee injury sustained by the five-time league winner.
Should a move for Davies happen, he would be the fifth new arrival at Oriel Park in the off season following on from the capture of Louie Annesley, Conor Malley, Hayden Muller and Cameron Elliott.
Dundalk are in pre-season action on Friday when they host Cork City at the AUL. Kick-off is at 2pm.
